Music

Music at Yew Chung International School of Qingdao (YCIS Qingdao) is a significant and vibrant part of the primary curriculum.

It is a necessary platform for the development of skills required in secondary school, thus is it studied by all primary students from Years 1 through 6.

The multi-faceted programme opens the student's ears to many different types of music while concurrently developing their technical music skills. The primary music programme is twofold:

  • It is studied by all children as part of weekly class lesson(s).
  • There are also optional after-school music programmes. At present, there are eight music activities and one music-related activity that are open to primary students after school.

The general music curriculum is based on the National Curriculum for England and is centred on three fundamental areas: listening, composing and performing. Additionally, students at YCIS Qingdao study a variety of music including Chinese and Western classical music and instruments, and the recorder.

Students in Years 1 to 3 take part in Yew Chung's unique violin programme. Taught under specialist instruction, children learn to master the strings and ultimately show their skills in high-profile school music concerts. Learning an instrument helps students develop important motor and disciplinary skills.
