As the homes and streets all around us stepped up preparation for Chinese New Year, so did the excitement for the big event heighten amongst our students. The Year of the Dragon was greeted with a feast of activities and acknowledgment of traditions. Our students experienced, tasted and demonstrated a range of colourful activities.
The campuses were set with decorations and lanterns plus a special assembly at the beginning of the week, drawing on the importance and recognition of the festival. Students prepared short performances focusing on Chinese Spring Festival for the parents, such as Kung Fu Panda, Tai Ji Kung Fu Fun and the 12 Year Chinese Zodiac Animals. The Chinese New Year Folk Stories were also a step towards appreciating the customs.
On Chinese Culture Day, by forming groups, the students transitioned through the workstations, each focusing on an activity. Students learned folk art painting, threading beads of red braided threads and paper cutting. To vary the type of involvement teachers created zones to bring the Chinese rhythm game for fun, which is the beating of bamboos whilst children jump over the lengths. Learning how to hand-fold and create delicious dumplings was a favourite activity; these were steamed and added to the lunch choice. Chinese New Year pictures, traditional games, Chinese musical instruments were arranged for sampling and enjoyment.
We wish all our students, parents and staff a very happy and prosperous Year of the Dragon.
