The students of Yew Chung International School come from all over the world. As an internal school with “comprehensive education” as the educational philosophy, we have always attached great importance to multicultural learning and often organize rich and diverse cultural activities to enhance mutual understanding.
On August 25, 2018, students from China and South Korea presented a wonderful performance at the Cultural Center of the West Coast New District of Qingdao. The performance was based on cultural exchanges and was rich in cultural characteristics of both countries. Our school organized Korean students to actively participate in this performance. For this performance, the students had a vigorous rehearsal schedule for one month during the summer vacation.
On the day of the performance, Korean students performed the traditional Korean program, “Samulnori.” (Samuilnori originated from the Korean traditional farming society, and the rice farmers harvesting music, juggling, dance and folk rituals to perform, pray and celebrate the harvest. Instruments include bass drums, small cymbals, long drums and janggu representing the four natural phenomena of wind, clouds, thunder and rain. The performers wear traditional hanbok, with strong tapping rhythm, active movements and stilts, expressing their respect for nature).
Chinese students from local schools performed folk music performances and classical dances with Chinese characteristics. At the peak of the performance, there was great applause from the audience.
The young people of the two countries performed on the same stage and shared their styles, which enhanced the spirit of solidarity and cooperation among the students. At the same time, by participating in such activities, students further understand the importance of the mission, philosophy and practice of Yew Chung International School, which is to respect and understand cultures around the world.
