At YCIS Qingdao, Model United Nations (MUN) is one of the most popular CCAs among secondary students.
Hundreds of thousands of students worldwide take part in Model UN every year at all educational levels. The MUN Programme aims to build and maintain strong links between the UN and Model UN participants across the globe. It does that through guides and workshops, which teach students how to make their simulations more accurate; by visiting Model UN conferences and sharing firsthand knowledge of what the actual UN is like; and through encouraging Model UN clubs to take real action to support UN values and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Participating in MUN activities give students the chance to grow as bilingual, global-minded, competitive, appreciative, and caring global citizens, which is also one of YCIS educational objectives.
Our Model United Nations (MUN) students committed themselves over semester 1 to learning and practising many skills that are demanded of MUN delegates. New language was explored as well as developing research skills and the very rigorous policies and procedures. The students showed great resilience and dedication in their commitment to this task, knowing that participation in these conferences will give them valuable experience. Experience that they will be able to use to achieve success in their IGCSE and IB courses but also their applications for university places and even employment. The conference was changed at the last minute from being 'in-person' to being virtual. This did not put our students off, and they demonstrated flexibility and resilience, quickly planning how to take part individually, in pairs and as small groups online. All of the students overcame the difficulties of an online conference by supporting each other and positively approaching the challenges they faced. They indeed showed what it means to be a YCISQD student. They really impressed the organisers with their enthusiasm and their English skills.
Recently, YCIS Qingdao Y12 student Hye Nah Cho, received confirmation that following a rigorous selection process, her application to be Head President of the MUNiSC XIV was successful. Hye Nah has worked incredibly hard to achieve this honour. Aside from attending numerous conferences to develop her skills through experience, she always makes herself available to support and encourage other students. Hye Nah has embodied what it is to be a leader and a member of the YCIS family. Hye Nah took part as the 'Head Chair' of the Human Rights Council in 2020's MUNOS conference. Following the 2021's MUNOS, she received the 'Best Delegate' award of the General Assembly among thirty other high school participants. She was also the delegate for Greece at the Yonsei MUN Conference(January 14th to 16th, 2022) and Korea MUN Conference(January 21st to 23rd, 2022); she became three resolutions' main submitter.
